2005 Grant Recipients

The Presbyterian Community Center for their Pathways for Youth After School Program and Light the Path Initiative. The $43,000 grant will provide support to low-income Southeast Roanoke children by offering increasing availability to Family Service’s family counselor; establishment of a partnership with Apple Ridge Farm to work with students in reading, outdoor science and nature and parenting education programs; establishment of a series of three cultural education modules; implementation of a Theatre Arts mini-residency with Young Audiences of Virginia; and expand partnerships with Roanoke City Public Schools to schedule on-site parent-teacher conferences and visits from faculty members of neighborhood schools.

The League of Older Americans – Breakfast Meals Program. LOA Meals-on-Wheels serves 600 homebound seniors a hot, nutritious lunch Monday-Friday. State funding cuts forced the termination of the breakfast program established in 1997 and run through 2004. At the time of termination, 100 area clients were receiving breakfast. The LOA’s successful Meals-on-Wheels program helps keep homebound seniors in their homes. The $45,000 grant will be used to provide 130 clients’ breakfast.

Saint Francis of Assisi Service Dog Foundation – Prison Pup Program was awarded $50,000 to expand their program in order to partner with the Virginia Wilderness Institute in Grundy, Virginia to teach juvenile offenders to train service dogs. By expanding this program, Saint Francis will better meet the demand for placement of service dogs while also providing rehabilitation to at-risk male teens. Currently, more than 30 qualified recipient candidates will have to wait up to five years for a service dog.
